COURSE INFORMATION
Course Description
This course teaches how to identify and perform procedures necessary to safely ascend and descend a utility pole. This course is designed for employees in the electric utility, telecommunications or cable TV industries who are groundmen or apprentice linemen. Basic Pole Climbing is also recommended for employees who assist night crews.
Classroom
Care and inspection of climbing gear - Proper sharpening and shaping of climbing gaffs
Techniques for pole inspection - Climbing hazards - Hazard recognition - Handlines
Field
Pole inspection - Remove and install crossarm - Basic climbing techniques
Insulator changeout - Hazard recognition - Proper handline use - Pole-top rescue
Each participant should bring
Climbers and gaff guards - Work gloves - Hand tools - Handline
Lineman body belt and fall arrest safety - Safety glasses - Rain gear
Long-sleeved shirts - Rubber gloves - Hardhat - Appropriate climbing boots
Course Prerequisites
The participant should have experience as a groundman or be an apprentice lineman.
Course Schedule
Course begins at 8 a.m., Tuesday, June 3 and ends at noon, Friday, June 6.

Continuing Education Units
32 hours (3.20 CEUs) A South Plains College certificate will be mailed to participants who complete this course and pay the $10 fee.
Registration cancelation policy: All changes or cancelations must be made by email to tknipstein@texas-ec.org. No refunds will be issued for cancelations made fewer than 15 days before the event. Cancelations made more than 15 days before the event will receive a full refund, minus a $50 charge per student or substitution.
